New tag line better reflects OSMC's medical practice OSMC is changing the tag line on its logo to "Michiana's leading musculoskeletal resource" because that phrase better describes what OSMC does in the community. The former tag line was "Michiana's leading center for orthopedic care." "We have discovered that many people don't understand what orthopedic care is and often are unaware of the range of services OSMC offers," said Don Hammond, chief executive officer of OSMC. "For instance, using the word 'musculoskeletal' rather than 'orthopedic' better describes the work we do with people's muscles, bones and joints. By calling ourselves a 'resource,' we remind people that we are a convenient source of musculoskeletal information. We have a number of programs where we are reaching out to the community because we want people to be well informed." Free seminars on conditions of the foot and ankle and of the knee and hip are good examples of OSMC's educational efforts. "These seminars give people accurate, up-to-date information on the latest diagnostic methods and treatments," said Hammond. "We also publish a variety of brochures and educational materials on musculoskeletal conditions, like our pamphlet on spinal fusion." Beyond the educational materials, OSMC makes every effort to be as accessible as possible. People who call usually can see a doctor that same day, and OSMC does not require patients be referred by another physician. "We try to make it convenient to secure musculoskeletal treatment," said Hammond. "This is why we maintain offices in Nappanee and Middlebury. People in those areas can get orthopedic care without having to drive to Elkhart." Another example of OSMC's community outreach is its work with area high school athletics. OSMC has a regular Injury Clinic every Monday evening for high school athletes. No appointment is necessary, and the initial physician consultation is free. Its physicians are present at all Memorial, Central, Concord and Jimtown football games to treat any injured players. Other services it provides include an intensive training camp for high school athletes and physicals at a number of area high schools. "Whether it's pain management, improving athletic performance or treating a damaged joint, we want people to know they have a good resource in OSMC for their muscle, bone and joint conditions," said Hammond. OSMC, formerly known as the Orthopedic and Sports Medicine Center, is the area’s leading center for musculoskeletal diagnosis, surgery and therapy care. Its main office is at 2310 California Road, Elkhart, but it also maintains offices in Nappanee and Middlebury. It has 12 physicians on staff, specializing in all areas of orthopedic care and pain management. OSMC’s services are organized in several divisions: The Hand Institute, Center for Sports Medicine, Knee & Hip Center, Back & Spine Center, Foot & Ankle Center, Work Injury Care Center and The Pain Management Center.
