Shoulder Pain That Won’t Go Away: Is It a Tear, Tendonitis, or Something Else?

May 29, 2026

OSMC Shoulder Pain That Won’t Go Away

Shoulder pain is one of the most common orthopedic complaints among adults of all ages. Whether it develops gradually over time or appears suddenly after an injury, ongoing shoulder pain can make everyday activities difficult. Reaching overhead, lifting objects, exercising, sleeping comfortably, or even getting dressed may become painful when the shoulder joint is not functioning properly.

At Orthopedic & Sports Medicine Center (OSMC), our orthopedic specialists help patients throughout Michiana, Northern Indiana, and Southwest Michigan locations find answers for persistent shoulder pain. While some shoulder discomfort improves with rest and conservative treatment, pain that does not go away may indicate an underlying orthopedic condition that requires medical attention.

Common Causes of Chronic Shoulder Pain

The shoulder is a complex joint composed of muscles, tendons, ligaments, cartilage, and bones that work together to provide movement and stability. Because the shoulder is used constantly throughout the day, it is especially vulnerable to overuse injuries and long-term degeneration.

Several orthopedic conditions can cause ongoing shoulder pain, including tendonitis, rotator cuff tears, arthritis, bursitis, and shoulder instability.

Understanding the cause of your symptoms is important for choosing the right treatment plan and preventing further damage.

Could It Be Shoulder Tendonitis?

Shoulder tendonitis occurs when the tendons surrounding the shoulder joint become irritated or inflamed. This condition is commonly caused by repetitive overhead movements, sports activities, heavy lifting, or age-related wear and tear.

Patients with shoulder tendonitis often experience:

  • Aching shoulder pain
  • Pain when lifting the arm
  • Tenderness near the shoulder joint
  • Mild swelling
  • Discomfort that worsens with activity

Tendonitis symptoms may begin gradually and worsen over time if left untreated. Early orthopedic treatment can help reduce inflammation and improve shoulder function before the condition progresses further.

Signs of a Rotator Cuff Tear

A rotator cuff tear is another common source of persistent shoulder pain. The rotator cuff is a group of muscles and tendons that stabilize the shoulder and assist with movement. Tears may occur suddenly from trauma or develop gradually due to repetitive strain and aging.

Common symptoms of a rotator cuff tear include:

  • Weakness in the shoulder or arm
  • Difficulty lifting objects
  • Pain when reaching overhead
  • Clicking or popping sensations
  • Shoulder pain that worsens at night

Some small tears may respond to conservative treatment such as physical therapy and anti-inflammatory medications, while more severe injuries may require surgical repair.

At OSMC, our orthopedic specialists provide advanced diagnostic imaging and personalized treatment plans to help patients recover safely and regain mobility.

Other Conditions That May Cause Shoulder Pain

Not all shoulder pain is caused by tendonitis or a tear. Several other orthopedic conditions can create similar symptoms, including arthritis, frozen shoulder, bursitis, pinched nerves, or shoulder instability.

Arthritis in the shoulder joint can lead to stiffness, grinding sensations, swelling, and chronic pain that worsens over time. Frozen shoulder may cause severe stiffness and reduced range of motion, making simple movements difficult.

Because many shoulder conditions share similar symptoms, an accurate diagnosis from an orthopedic specialist is essential.

When Should You See an Orthopedic Shoulder Specialist?

If your shoulder pain lasts more than a few weeks, limits your daily activities, or continues to worsen despite rest and home care, it may be time to seek orthopedic treatment.

At OSMC, our board-certified and fellowship-trained orthopedic providers offer comprehensive shoulder care, including diagnostics, physical therapy, sports medicine, pain management, and advanced surgical treatment when necessary.

Our goal is to help patients reduce pain, restore movement, and return to the activities they enjoy most.

If shoulder pain is interfering with your quality of life, contact OSMC today or visit one of our convenient walk-in orthopedic clinics for expert care from a trusted orthopedic team.
