Trauma & Fractures
People of all ages are at risk of suffering orthopedic trauma and fractures. A fracture is just another word for a bone break. Such injuries can occur as the result of auto accidents, slips and falls, workplace or sports injuries, and more.
Depending on your overall health and the presence of other medical conditions, the trauma you suffer need not even be significant in order for your bones to break. This is the case for those with osteoporosis, a degenerative condition in which the bones become weak and brittle and more easily susceptible to breaking – so much so that a forceful sneeze can do it!
There are many ways your bones can be injured. The bone may have a tiny crack, but not break all the way through (called a greenstick fracture). The broken bone may break through the skin or not. When the skin is punctured, this carries the additional worry of infection, a serious complication that can lead to bone tissue death.
OSMC providers have the expertise and experience to properly diagnose and treat your fracture on the spot. We offer many different types of durable medical equipment, so there is bound to be whatever you need handy and available – saving you time and a trip to another store or facility.
When to Seek Medical Attention for Orthopedic Trauma
A bone break is serious – and usually painful – and requires immediate medical attention. If you suffer a bone fracture, it is usually obvious: the area becomes swollen and painful, and you may not be able to move it. Depending on the type of break you suffered, you may notice an obvious deformity, with the bone appearing out of place.
