When to See a Knee Surgeon
At some point, surgery may become necessary to improve your quality of life. If surgery is required, we offer a wide variety of services at our outpatient surgery centers, including robotic-assisted joint replacement surgery, with the ROSA Knee System. Learn more about ROSA and the difference it can make in a full knee replacement.
Indiana patients with pain, stiffness, and swelling in the knee may want to consult a knee surgeon at OSMC if medicine, exercise, and alternative medical techniques are ineffective. Patients with osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis – diseases that can destroy bone and cartilage – may have no other recourse for treatment of their diseases.
What to Expect from Knee Surgery
In a partial knee replacement, the surgeon will replace only the damaged portions of the knee while keeping the healthy portions intact. In total knee replacement surgery, the bone and cartilage in all areas of the knee are replaced.
Your knee surgeon may also offer minimally invasive knee surgery, or arthroscopy, in which very small devices are placed through small incisions in order to repair the damaged knee tissues. Patients having minimally invasive treatments typically have less blood loss, less discomfort, and quicker recovery following surgery.
What is a Total Knee Replacement?
Total knee replacement is a highly effective surgical procedure for knee arthritis. Over time, minimally invasive surgical procedures for knee replacement have been developed to reduce tissue stress and enhance patient outcomes.
This minimally invasive technique uses incisions that are much smaller than the 10 to 12-inch incisions used in traditional knee replacement. This means that the quadriceps muscle and tendon, which controls the bending of the knee, don't have to be cut to get to the knee joint.
With minimally invasive surgery, fewer tissues are cut due to the smaller incisions, resulting in faster healing and recovery. The advantages of this type of knee surgery are:
- Minimal surgical dissection
- Shorter recovery period
- Shorter hospital stay
- Reduced post-operative pain
Knee Surgery Recovery
Recovery from knee surgery varies by the condition being treated and the surgery used to treat it.
- Knee replacement - According to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS), most people need 1 to 4 days in the hospital after a total knee replacement. Some experts think elevating and moving the leg reduces swelling and improves blood circulation. Returning to work can take days to months, which depends on job type and tasks, and most patients resume normal activities 3 to 6 weeks after a complete knee replacement
- Knee arthroscopy - Many individuals leave the hospital the same day or the next morning, although it may take a few days to many months before they feel normal again. Some people need crutches or painkillers in the days after surgery, and keep the leg elevated as much as possible. The physician will tell the patient when they can return to driving, sports, and heavy lifting
Physical therapy is also very important to the healing process after knee surgery. Exercises to help strengthen and increase flexibility in the joint are crucial to effective and efficient healing.
