Overuse Injuries From Running, Golf, and Yard Work

May 29, 2026

OSMC Overuse Injuries From Running, Golf, and Yard Work

Not all orthopedic injuries happen suddenly. Many develop gradually over time from repetitive movement, strain, or overuse. Activities like running, golfing, and even seasonal yard work can place repeated stress on muscles, tendons, ligaments, and joints, eventually leading to pain and injury.

At Orthopedic & Sports Medicine Center (OSMC), we frequently treat patients for overuse injuries that interfere with everyday life and recreational activities. Recognizing the early signs of these conditions can help prevent long-term damage and keep you active and healthy.

What Is an Overuse Injury?

An overuse injury occurs when repetitive stress is placed on a specific part of the body without enough time for recovery. Unlike traumatic injuries that happen suddenly, overuse injuries develop gradually as tissues become irritated, inflamed, or damaged over time.

These injuries are especially common among runners, golfers, active adults, and individuals performing repetitive physical tasks such as gardening, landscaping, or yard maintenance.

Common symptoms of overuse injuries include:

  • Persistent aches or soreness
  • Swelling around a joint or tendon
  • Stiffness or reduced mobility
  • Pain that worsens with activity
  • Weakness or instability
  • Tenderness in muscles or joints

Ignoring these symptoms can sometimes lead to more serious orthopedic conditions that require longer recovery periods.

Running Injuries Caused by Repetitive Stress

Running is excellent for cardiovascular health, but repetitive impact can place strain on the knees, hips, ankles, and feet. Overuse injuries are especially common when training intensity increases too quickly or when improper footwear and biomechanics contribute to excessive stress.

Some of the most common running injuries include:

  • Runner’s knee
  • Achilles tendonitis
  • Shin splints
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Stress fractures
  • IT band syndrome

Many runners initially try to “push through” the pain, but continuing activity without treatment can worsen the injury and delay recovery. Early orthopedic evaluation can help identify the underlying cause and prevent further complications.

Golf Injuries and Repetitive Motion

Golf may appear low impact, but repetitive swinging motions can place stress on the shoulders, elbows, wrists, back, and hips. Poor swing mechanics, overuse, or inadequate warm-up routines can increase the risk of injury.

One of the most common golf-related conditions is golfer’s elbow, which causes pain and inflammation along the inner portion of the elbow. Shoulder tendonitis, lower back strain, and wrist injuries are also frequently seen among golfers.

At OSMC, our orthopedic specialists and sports medicine providers help patients safely return to the activities they enjoy while reducing the risk of recurring injuries.

Yard Work Can Lead to Orthopedic Injuries Too

Many people underestimate the physical demands of yard work. Activities such as raking, lifting mulch, digging, trimming, mowing, and repetitive bending can strain the muscles and joints, especially after long periods of inactivity during colder months.

Yard work injuries commonly affect the back, shoulders, knees, and hands. Repetitive twisting, lifting heavy objects improperly, or spending hours performing unfamiliar movements can lead to tendonitis, muscle strains, and joint inflammation.

Taking frequent breaks, stretching beforehand, using proper lifting techniques, and pacing yourself can help reduce the risk of injury.

When to See an Orthopedic Specialist

If pain persists for more than a few days, worsens during activity, or begins limiting your ability to move comfortably, it may be time to see an orthopedic specialist.

At OSMC, we provide comprehensive orthopedic care for sports injuries, repetitive stress injuries, tendonitis, joint pain, and musculoskeletal conditions. Our experienced team offers advanced diagnostics, physical therapy, sports medicine treatment, pain management, and surgical care when needed.

Since 1973, patients throughout Northern Indiana and Southwest Michigan have trusted OSMC for expert orthopedic care focused on helping people stay active and healthy.

If pain from running, golf, yard work, or repetitive activity is affecting your quality of life, contact OSMC today or visit one of our convenient walk-in orthopedic clinics for expert care.
