Is There a Difference Between an Orthopedist and an Orthopedic Surgeon?

July 22, 2024

Orthopedist vs Orthopedic Surgeon

An orthopedist and an orthopedic surgeon sound similar because they are both highly skilled providers who can treat various injuries and conditions of the musculoskeletal system. Each provides diagnosis, treatment, prevention, and rehabilitation of issues related to muscles, bones, joints, ligaments, and tendons. The difference between an orthopedist and an orthopedic surgeon is that a surgeon can provide surgical treatment when needed.

What Do Orthopedists Do?

When you’re struggling with pain from a chronic condition like arthritis or have suffered an injury, you may be referred to an orthopedist. These specialists will diagnose and treat the problem using various non-surgical methods, including casts, splints, and braces. They may provide pre-surgery consultation to help you understand your options and can supervise the recovery process after surgery. They will work with occupational or physical therapists to get you back on your feet. However, they cannot perform surgery.

What Does an Orthopedic Surgeon Do?

Orthopedic surgeons provide all the same care as orthopedists and can perform surgery. Some providers will be with you from diagnosis, exploring non-surgical options before suggesting surgery, while others focus on providing surgical interventions for medical issues related to the musculoskeletal system. An orthopedist may refer you to an orthopedic surgeon for severe conditions such as ruptured discs, rotator cuff repair, traumatic fractures, ACL tear, or carpal tunnel syndrome. Some common surgeries the orthopedic surgeons at OSMC in Indiana perform include the following:

Osteotomy

This surgery involves the cutting or repositioning of bones and can be used to treat osteoarthritis, limb deformity, and other issues.

Joint Replacement

This surgery involves the partial or total replacement of a damaged joint and is used to treat arthritis damage and traumatic fractures.

Internal Fixation

The surgery involves using plates, screws, or pins to hold together pieces of broken bones. It is used to treat open fractures.

Arthroscopy

This surgery utilizes small incisions to insert a tiny camera to inspect and treat joint problems.

Should I See an Orthopedist or an Orthopedic Surgeon?

If your injury isn’t severe, or you want to explore non-surgical treatment options, you may find it appropriate to seek treatment with an orthopedist. These specialists can determine the cause of your pain and provide treatment options to minimize pain and prevent future injuries. However, for many, an orthopedic surgeon may be the best option. When you begin your treatment with the orthopedic surgeons at OSMC, you can take comfort in knowing your surgeon will be there with you from diagnosis and treatment to surgery and recovery. Beginning care with an orthopedic surgeon can lead to faster access to surgical options as you won’t have to wait for a referral from your orthopedist.
