Shoulder Arthroscopy Specialists in Northern Indiana

If you're experiencing chronic shoulder pain, a rotator cuff tear, or a labral injury that is limiting your daily life, arthroscopic shoulder surgery may be the key to restoring your mobility. At OSMC, our board-certified orthopedic shoulder surgeons utilize non-invasive treatments in Elkhart to help our patients return to their active routines safely and quickly.

What is Arthroscopic Shoulder Surgery?

Arthroscopic shoulder surgery is a non-invasive shoulder procedure known to diagnose and treat joint problems. Unlike traditional shoulder surgery procedures, arthroscopic shoulder surgery is a specialized procedure that inserts a tiny camera, called arthroscope through small incisions. Arthroscope helps provide a clear view to diagnose and repair joint damage such as bicep tendon conditions, cartilage tears, rotator cuff tears or tendonitis, and shoulder arthritis.

At OSMC, we frequently use arthroscopy to treat:

  • Shoulder Arthritis
  • Rotator Cuff Injuries & Tears
  • Shoulder Fractures
  • Shoulder Tendonitis
  • Severe Shoulder Impingement
  • Shoulder Instability or Dislocations

Benefits of Arthroscopic Shoulder Surgery

At OSMC, we believe there are great benefits for choosing a minimally invasive approach over traditional open surgery. Arthroscopic shoulder surgery offers several benefits for shoulder joint recovery:

  • Minimal tissue trauma
  • Reduced post-surgery pain
  • Faster physical rehabilitation
  • Lower complication risks such as infections and blood loss

Arthroscopic Shoulder Surgery Recovery Timeline

After an arthroscopic shoulder surgery, a full return to normal activity can take up 3 to 6 months. You will be required to wear a sling for 4 to 6 weeks depending on the shoulder condition to protect the repaired tissue.

A frequent question our clinical team at OSMC hears is: "How soon can I drive after the arthroscopic shoulder surgery? Most patients safely return to driving between 2 to 6 weeks after the arthroscopic surgery. The exact timeline depends on the specific nature of your arthroscopic procedure. To safely operate and drive after an arthroscopic surgery it's important to meet clinical milestones, and to consult with your doctor for individualized clearance.

  1. Completely off all opioid prescription pain medications from the surgery for at least 24-48 hours
  2. Surgeon approval to clear you from using your post-operation shoulder sling
  3. Must be recovered to physical strength to be able to turn the steering wheel, and maneuver the car without hesitation or pain
