Starting the Year in Pain? When Joint Pain Signals a Bigger Problem

January 29, 2026

joint pain after holidays

The new year is a time for fresh starts, but for many, it also comes with lingering joint pain that seems to flare up after the holidays. Whether it’s aching knees after long shopping trips or stiff shoulders from winter travel, post-holiday joint pain is common. But how do you know when it’s more than just temporary soreness?

If you’re starting the year in pain, it may be time to take a closer look.

Why Do Joints Hurt More After the Holidays?

Several factors can contribute to joint pain during and after the holiday season:

  • Increased activity – Traveling, cooking, decorating, or walking long distances while shopping can overwork joints, especially if they’re already inflamed or weakened.
  • Cold weather – Lower temperatures can cause joints to feel stiffer and more painful due to changes in circulation and joint fluid.
  • Stress and fatigue – Physical and emotional stress during the holidays can lead to inflammation and poor posture, which aggravates joint issues.
  • Inactivity – While some people overdo it, others become more sedentary during the holidays, which can lead to stiff joints and weakened muscles.

For most people, this kind of pain fades with rest, gentle stretching, or over-the-counter medication. But what if it doesn’t?

When Joint Pain Signals Something More

If joint pain persists well into January—or seems to be getting worse—it could be a sign of an underlying condition that needs medical attention. Some red flags include:

  • Pain that lasts more than a week
  • Swelling or warmth around the joint
  • Pain that limits your ability to walk, lift, or bend
  • A popping or grinding sensation when moving the joint
  • Difficulty bearing weight or using the joint normally

These symptoms may point to arthritis, bursitis, joint degeneration, or even an ACL tear or ligament injury. Early diagnosis is key to preventing long-term damage and preserving mobility.

Don’t Wait for It to Get Worse

Too often, people assume joint pain is something they just have to live with, especially after a busy season. But untreated joint issues can worsen over time, making recovery longer and more difficult.

The orthopedic specialists at OSMC are here to help you start the year strong. With advanced imaging, non-surgical options, and expert evaluation, we’ll get to the root of your joint pain and create a plan that works for your lifestyle and goals.
