Addressing his foot pain = “transforming.”

April 24, 2024

His Quality of Life is Back after Foot Surgery

In his mid-60’s Phillip is in shape. He’s an avid runner, loves biking and goes to the gym to work out regularly. “I like to be focused, organized and active,” he says.

The heel of his foot started to really bother him in 2020. “I could always put up with a little pain, but this was intense and different,” he notes. The stinging and throbbing of the bottom of his foot held him back, at work and in his spare time.

Phil really never thought he’d have pain so debilitating he would not be able to continue to stay fit. He slowed down from running and lifting weights, thinking he’d give his heel time to recover and feel better. “Yet, my heel didn’t really heal itself. There was still pain,” he says.

For the next two-and-a-half years Phil tried conservative treatment options to address the pain, including anti-inflammatories, wraps, taping, braces, new shoes, shoe inserts, exercises and more. “I wasn’t really interested in having surgery. I put it off as long as possible. I eventually realized I had gained 40 pounds and I wasn’t finding the quality of life I needed and wanted. I finally decided that it was time to talk to a specialist,” he says.

Phil chose orthopedic foot and ankle surgeon, Dr. Scott Trumble, at OSMC, to assist him in getting back to a pain-free, active life. Dr. Trumble determined that Phil had an osteophyte, also called a bone spur, in his heel. Phil said, “The surgical team told me that it was the biggest bone spur they’d ever seen.”

Phil had the surgery and stated that it took just a week to feel better, and no more stinging pain! He went to physical therapy sessions to regain balance and strength. Three-and-a-half months later he’s back doing his favorite work outs and losing weight. “It’s been transforming for me. I was holding back, not really doing the things I like to do. I’m blessed, my heel is doing great and my quality of life is back!”
